An Artist In Temp

A mini-doc I shot for an Arizona client featuring Tempe-based visual artist Marie Navarre. This was actually shot for the architect who designed her backyard studio.

My client specifically did not want an overt advertisement for his work, so we chose Marie as the main subject of the piece while letting the space hover in the background as a supporting character who quietly makes its presence known.

A labor of love and a testament to what happens when creativity and collaboration compensate for a shoestring budget. Most of the funds for this project went towards renting the diner we shot in for the interior night scenes. Everything else was flexibility and elbow grease.

The Value Proposition

 

Dream it.

I can help you conceptualize a compelling story based on your desired results. We can boost sales by focusing on the pain points your product or service solves or inspire brand loyalty by creating an inspiring narrative that emotionally resonates with your target audience. Beautiful images are meaningless without the right context. We need to answer the basics: Who, what, when, where, why how? I need to learn about your business and visualize what a “successful” video production campaign means for you. What mediums are the best host for your message? What are your competitors doing well and poorly?

Plan it

We need big ideas. But the world is full of abandoned inspiration. This is where we mold the clay dense in creative nutrients into something tangible. A mood board becomes a script, which gives birth to a shot list. We discover a tone and aesthetic.

Did you know colors have an enormous impact on our emotions? It’s science. For example, the color pink is known to create associations with concepts of “relief.” Can you think of a particular bubble gum flavored product that specifically offers that after indulging in wings and pizza? These are the things we think about.

We scout locations and cast appropriate talent, hire crew when needed, and at times hash out some of the boring but crucial details of pre-production such as location permits, and optimizing your budget for the best results. Obsessing over the details gives us the creativity and flexibility to pivot and adapt should something come out of left field later.

Shoot it.

This is the big date where the lightning strikes and gives life to the dormant concepts of our pre-production. We use state-of-the-art cameras, appropriate lenses for the story, cinematic lighting, and whatever appropriate tools are needed to create beautiful images that serve as the vessel for the underlying message intended for your audience. We get it done on time and on budget while maintaining flexibility for happy accidents.

 

Cut It.

The story is made in the edit. There’s a reason why people win Academy Awards for it. You can have shots bursting with beauty painted by angels themselves, and still have people click away after twenty seconds. There is no shortage of wonderfully shot films mangled with pacing issues. Great cinematography is a must, but you need to trim the fat and hit the right emotional beats. This is where we cut the teeth of your narrative, revise it, and optimize it for the intended platform.

Polish It.

This is the hot fudge and syrup. Color grading that services the story, dynamic texts that supplement our information, and all the “fun stuff” that can really set your work apart.

Share it.

We didn’t go through all this time and expense to keep your videos stored in some Dropbox folder, did we? At this point, you’ll have a variety of video assets ready to distribute to your audience wherever they reside. A beautiful vanity piece for your website that hooks visitors and keeps them from clicking away in three seconds as they do to everyone else. Fun, shareable videos that teach your audience something valuable on Instagram which establishes trust. A library of assets on youtube that pops up on search results for years to come providing a constant stream of new faces for your audience.
